Syngenta AG is a
Swiss agri-business company that provides seeds and pesticides. Its R&D
projects are focused on biotech and genomic researches. The company leads the
world in crop protection.
Syngenta was
established in 2000 when Novartis Agribusiness and Zeneca Agrochemicals merged.
Both parent-companies have older roots. Novartis was formerly known as Sandoz
Laboratories. Zeneca Agrochemicals was a part of the AstraZeneca group.
Among the
products of Syngenta are pesticides (which includes selective and non-selective
herbicides, fungicides, insecticides and other professional products), seeds
(which include field crops, vegetables and flowers). The field crops produced
by Syngenta include hybrid
seeds and genetically engineered seeds. When the Swiss
government banned genetically engineered organisms in 2005, Syngenta was
one of the most expressive of its opposition to the ban.
Syngenta
established the Syngenta Foundation to work with communities in rural areas.
Its major goal is to help the people in these communities improve their lives.
